Giving as part of righteousness
Quran 2:177 includes giving to relatives, orphans, people in need and travellers among the qualities of righteousness. Concern for others is presented alongside belief, prayer and keeping promises.
Give without causing hurt
Quran 2:261 describes the multiplied reward of spending in Allah’s cause. The following verse, 2:262, praises giving that is not followed by reminders of generosity or hurtful treatment.
Zakat and other giving
The five-pillars narration in Sahih al-Bukhari 8 includes zakat. Obligatory zakat has specific rules; this short introduction is not a calculation guide. For your own obligations, seek reliable instruction about the relevant conditions.
A few things to remember.
- Pay attention to people in need around you.
- Protect the dignity of the person receiving help.
- Learn the specific rules of zakat before calculating it.
